What is Organic Beauty?
Organic Beauty is the formulation of cosmetic products using organically farmed plant-derived ingredients and other natural ingredients. These ingredients are grown without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and more.
A number of companies offer certified organic or certified natural beauty products. Although beauty products are regulated by the FDA (which does not offer an organic certification), beauty products can meet the USDA’s organic certification requirements if they are made with agricultural ingredients.
Beauty products made with 100% organic ingredients can be labeled 100% USDA Organic and display the USDA Organic seal, while products that are made with at least 95% organic ingredients can be labeled USDA Organic and show the USDA Organic seal (the remaining ingredients must be approved ingredients). Products made with at least 70% organic ingredients and other approved ingredients can bear the Made with Organic Ingredients label but not the USDA Organic seal.
Note: Many countries have their own strict organic certification guidelines and labeling. There are international certifications as well.
